When Covid started, I was looking for another project. At this time, I had limited tools since I recently moved and mine were still packed up. While browsing the internet, I saw several speakers shaped like a sphere. I took them as an inspiration and started to design my own concept. Since I had an old pair of JBL Control One speakers, they were the obvious choice to start from. I liked their sound, and the primary purpose was to improve their visual aspects. I didn’t have the capabilities to turn wood, and so I used two of this bamboos IKEA bowls. In the next step, I created the CAD files. There are two different parts to be 3D printed, the brackets to hold the front and the bass reflex tube. I uploaded both files to a Github Repository in case someone wants to build a set of them too.

I had all pieces 3D printed and created the fronts out of MDF in a local wood shop. Next, it was time to align and fix the brackets, mount the high and mid-range speakers, install the tube, and insert the crossover from the back. I bought some sealing tubes which were originally designed to be used for a car door. I glued them around the cover to block any air from going out except via the tube.

The result still amazes me, not only visually, but they even sounded better than before. In combination with a subwoofer, they are a joy to listen to! I don’t have measuring equipment, so this is only my personal preference.
